Understanding Fitness vs. Relative Fitness: What’s the Difference?
When it comes to fitness, there are two important types of fitness known as Fitness and Relative Fitness. Although these terms may sound similar, they have very different meanings. What is Fitness?

For instance, let’s say there are two individuals of the same species of bird, one with a larger beak and one with a smaller beak. In a habitat dominated by large seeds, the bird with the larger beak would have higher fitness because it can easily crack the larger seeds and obtain more food. In contrast, in a habitat dominated by small seeds, the bird with the smaller beak would have higher fitness because it can easily crack the smaller seeds to obtain more food.
What is Relative Fitness?
Relative fitness, on the other hand, refers to the fitness of an organism in comparison to the fitness of other organisms in the same environment. In other words, it’s a measure of how successful an organism is in competing with others of the same species. Relative fitness is important because it determines which organisms will be more likely to pass on their genes to the next generation.
Going back to our example of the birds with large and small beaks, let’s say both birds are present in a habitat dominated by large seeds. Even though the bird with the smaller beak has lower fitness than the bird with the larger beak, it may have higher relative fitness if there are not enough large seeds available to feed all the birds. In this case, the smaller-beaked bird may be able to survive and reproduce better than the larger-beaked bird because it can still find enough food to survive.
Which is More Important: Fitness or Relative Fitness?
Both fitness and relative fitness are important for different reasons. If you’re trying to survive in a particular environment, fitness is essential because it determines how well you can adapt to the environment. However, if you’re competing with others of the same species, relative fitness is more important because it determines how successful you’ll be in passing on your genes.
For example, if you’re a bodybuilder, your fitness is important because it determines how well you can adapt to your workouts and build muscle. However, your relative fitness is equally important because it determines how successful you’ll be in competitions against other bodybuilders.
